Google Juice and the Art of SEO

Ahhh, Google Juice. That glorious feeling of doing a Google search for your keywords and turning up on page one. Or better yet, number one page one.

Recently, I was asked to give a presentation to a local real estate company on why they need social media. They gave me 20 minutes. I only needed five.

First I showed them a quick video I had prepared on Canadian social media statistics, and secondly (and my favorite) I opened a web browser, brought up Google and did a search on my (secondary) keywords. "Nova Scotia social media consultant". Go ahead... do it. We DOMINATE page one. (insert grin) I told them, "The last thing I do each night is visit Google Analytics to measure the traffic to my site, clear my cache (to get a true reading) and perform (yet another) search for my keywords." It's true. My routine. The LAST thing I do each night. One particularly outspoken (and fun) guy in the group said, "Get a life". *Note: my primary keywords are "Nova Scotia virtual tours". We're ranking well with these too.

I bet I'm not alone. It's said that the driving force behind the success of Facebook is vanity. I completely relate. And there is something COMPLETELY satisfying about "the feeling" of being in "control" of your Google ranking.

So... What's my secret?
•    First of all, admittedly (and luckily) there is not a lot of competition for my keywords. (Whew!)
•    Second, you will notice a lot of links to my various social media profiles. Twitter - Nancy Bain LinkedIn - Nancy Bain, Activerain - Nancy Bain , and my favorite, Facebook - Nova Scotia Virtual Tours Each of my social media accounts are optimized for my keywords. Yours should be too.
•    And finally - I employ a little SEO.
What is SEO? Search engine optimization is the art making small modifications to parts of your website that could have a noticeable impact on your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. SEO is a quest for increased visibility in search engines via relevant copy, quality links, domain trust, social popularity and search engine connectivity.

Here are a couple of guides that helped me with SEO:

Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

SEOmoz The Beginners Guide to SEO

Join Supernova Studios e-Club to download our SEO Guide and receive our monthly newsletter.

Getting (long term) traffic from Google is about KEYWORDS and LINKS. It’s about being relevant enough for a keyword search, and being trusted enough to rank for it.

To help improve your sites ranking:
•    Use "Geo Keywords" in all your title tags and make sure each page has a unique title
•    Make sure your meta-descriptions are unique and reference copy you have on your pages
•    Link your pages to one another. Links are like lasers. When you link to a page, you heat the page you are linking to
•    Make sure you use unique original copy. Google favors diversity
•    Get quality inbound links. Google considers an inbound link from an authority site as a "vote" for your page
•    Read Google Webmaster Guidelines and make sure you comply but do not use “Google Submit Your Site” to submit your site. Google prefers to find a link to your site on a site it already knows.
•    Setup your Google Places account immediately. Read our blog for instructions.
•    If you are totally lost, contact us.

What is a keyword? And specifically "geo" keywords.

When you're looking for a great pizza in a town you'll be visiting next week, you do what millions of other people do. You go to Google and type in "Pizza, any town" You ALWAYS include the town/city/location. That's the "geo" in geo-keywords. Note my keywords "Nova Scotia social media consultant" Someone in Nova Scotia searching for my services would (hopefully) perform a search using my keywords. Or possibly "Nova Scotia social media trainer". My site is optimized using these keywords. Specific pages http://www.supernovastudios.ca/social-media-consulting-training  within my site are optimized for various synomyms of my keywords.

What is a "quality inbound link"?

Inbound links are links from pages on external sites linking back to your site. Inbound links can bring new users to your site, and when the links are an authority source, they're also a positive signals to Google about your site's importance.

How can I get "quality inbound links"

Create Good Content: Nothing will serve you better when it comes to inbound links, and many other areas of your site, than creating good content. Writing an insightful blog post or creating a useful template or presentation will not only lead people to link to your site, but also drive traffic and build equity in your site and brand.

Directories can be a great inbound link source. Focus on local/industry-specific options if available.

Vendors/Suppliers These people or groups have a vested interest in helping you succeed. Explain to them that you’re trying to increase your exposure on the web and that this will in turn help them as well.

Business Allies Business allies can include any type of business partner that you’ve worked or networked with that isn’t a direct competitor.

Sponsorships / Charities / Associations If you serve on a Board, have made a significant contribution to a charity or are a member of an association, these groups are looking for ways to thank you and provide value in return -- especially if it doesn’t cost them any money.

Sure hope this helps, I'd be interested to hear from you about your results. Changing your page titles to include your Geo-keywords will take 5 minutes. Do it! Measure your traffic today and compare in 2 weeks. You can thank me then.

To your success! (unless of course we have the same keywords!) wink...

360 by 360 Virtual Tours Under Heavy Attack

This is real and you heard me talking about it on our last RTV webinar. Full 360 by 360 virtual tours are being heavily attacked right now on the Internet. As many of you know,  the new RTV system is being programmed to support 360 by 360 images so an attack of this nature could soon be hitting too close to home for many of you. As a network it is time for us to pull our numbers together, educate ourselves, and help stop this fight against virtual reality. Even if you're not currently offering full 360 by 360 virtual tours please read on.

So what the heck is this all about?

You may have heard of the infamous '400 patent. ( US Patent 6,754,400 ). Anyone with knowledge considers it junk. It's almost as if they just copied Quicktime, iPix and various common virtual tour practices, wrote them down and claimed they invented it all -- in 2001. They sent it off to the US Patent office never acknowledging the existing "prior art." The patent examiners never noticed it so they gave them the patent. Done!

An outfit called Tour Technology Systems, LLC (TTS) now owns the patent and is using it to demand money from our clients. Yes not YOU…but the end users who have 360 by 360 virtual tours in their websites. This includes hotels, builders, realtors, facilities, anybody who uses 360 by 360 virtual tours!! TTS's lawyer sends them a letter saying their use of the 360 virtual tour infringes TTS's patent and demands significant money for their continued use or they will take immediate legal action.

Obviously, your client freaks out and immediately places an irate or distressed phone call to you, the person who sold them what now appears to be a "Bag of Goods". It is, after all, a real patent right??? Even if you try to tell your client that they are protected and that you used a different technology than the one referred to in the patent, it doesn't matter. The cost of defending against the '400 patent is too great. In most cases they get mad at you the photographer for putting them in this situation, ask for their money back, and ultimately they take the virtual tour down. Many of these customers will swear to never use VR tours ever again and often tell friends and family about the incident.  This of course is quite damaging to even those of us using cylindrical based technology.

And so the story goes. If you would like to find out how to help fight in this case you join us for an RTV webinar on June 7th at 7:00 Eastern. Henry Woodman of Ice Portal and myself will be talking about this patent and discussing the ways in which you can help the fight. Sign up for this show now in your TMS!

See you there RTV. We need all the numbers we can get.

Super Duper Site Maps

Nova Scotia virtual tour genie here on the importance of Sitemaps. We loved the pretty sitemap available on the BlueLavaMedia (Traverse City Virtual Tours) site and it got the wheels turning. Within Google webmaster tools we noticed that you were able to submit an XML sitemap to Google. What’s a Nova scotia virtual tour genie to do when she has SEO questions?  She calls RTV. RTV are the number one virtual tour software company AND digital property marketing experts. They never disappoint and below is some of the information they shared with us.

About Sitemaps

Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site they might not otherwise discover. In its simplest terms, a XML Sitemap—usually called Sitemap, with a capital S—is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

A sitemap tells Googles about about pages on your site they might not otherwise discover.

Sitemaps are particularly helpful if:
▪ Your site has dynamic content.
▪ Your site has pages that aren't easily discovered by Googlebot during the crawl process—for example, pages featuring rich AJAX or images.
▪ Your site is new and has few links to it. (Googlebot crawls the web by following links from one page to another, so if your site isn't well linked, it may be hard for us to discover it.)
▪ Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all.

"Google doesn't guarantee that we'll crawl or index all of your URLs. However, we use the data in your Sitemap to learn about your site's structure, which will allow us to improve our crawler schedule and do a better job crawling your site in the future. In most cases, webmasters will benefit from Sitemap submission, and in no case will you be penalized for it."

SiteMap Generator - Simply enter your www url into this generator select the frequency as 'monthly' (unless you positively update your ENTIRE website every week or every day) and generate your XML sitemap. The next time Google crawls your site it will index this sitemap and you have given Google precise instructions on how often to crawl your website. Once you have generated your sitemap, you can change the frequency of individual pages by changing 'monthly' to 'weekly' or 'daily'. Only change those pages that you know you update daily (RSS feeds) or weekly. If unsure, always opt for less crawls. When done, upload the xml file to the root of your site.

Once you've added the XML file to your site, you may want to consider having a clickable link on your home page to a sitemap you have created. (for easy navigation and  as a way to tell visitors about pages on your site they might not otherwise discover)

Tornados Strike | Insurance Documentation Services Rise

Tornado Devastation - Will you be prepared?
Massive Devastation in Oklahoma due to the tornado that hit Oklahoma and Missouri areas yesterday.  Grove Oklahoma-Grand Lake and Joplin, Missouri were hit by a tornado yesterday.  Joplin reported 89 deaths so far, but this could climb as the search for survivors continue on the following days.  My husband, his son and myself  have a Automotive business about 8.8 miles south of Locust Grove, Oklahoma and we  were not affected but it came very close to us. Relatives of my husbands’ family lived in Joplin, Missouri lost their home but their lives were saved.  The devastation is overwhelming for them; they just relocated to Joplin, Missouri a few months ago due to job re-location. This young family of 3 will have to start all over with all their house hold belonging, clothing, dishes, and I am sure you could imagine, so the list goes on.
The following link shows the pictures, slideshows and videos of the devastation of this massive tornado and the horrible loss that so many people have experienced.

http://www.newson6.com/story/14695992/joplin-missouri-officials-say-tornado-killed-at-least-89?redirected=true

Most people are not prepared for such disasters, providing the insurance adjusters with the receipts and photo’s to provide proof of the loss. In most cases not having proof of your items means you will not receive the full value from your valuables from your insurance company.

Here at Tulsa Eagle Eye Virtual Tours has a perfect solution for you and your valuables with our Tulsa Eagle Eye Inventory Virtual Tour!  Let us photograph, document, and securely store all images of your valuables on a CD and on RTV's secure virtual tour server facility where they will be a mouse click away, giving you proof of ownership for your Insurance Company to verify.

Our wide variety of services include the state of art interactive 360 virtual tours, professional photography services, powerful slideshow presentations along with many other services to provide you with the very best presentation of your property and or belongings.

Finally we would also like to show you a related posting from another fellow RTV dealer from Tuscaloosa.  Here's a virtual tour of the destruction from that tornado: http://rtvpix.com/SC-8694-0BTF81-01

Moving Off Tour Builder 3.0 Software

Hello RTV! I just wanted explain a couple of differences between using the old Tour Builder 3.0 virtual tour software and the new Tour Builder 4.0 online virtual tour software as well as the benefits of the new online software.

In Tour Builder 3.0 you are used to doing the photo stitching and virtual tour building the tour all in the same software.  If you look at the process you will see that the process is broken down into two processes, stitching and virtual tour building. In TB3 you would click to create a new tour, select the tour type, fill in the information and click to create the tour.  See legacy virtual tour software video. Then you would start stitching your pans and uploading your stills.  After the stitching was completed you clicked the button to add the pan into the tour.  For the stills pictures you had to click on a different button and add them in one by one.  After all of your images were loaded into the tour then you would give them a name, compress them, add hotspots, organize your scene sort order, and then upload the whole tour file in standard resolution to your TMS account.  If you wanted the HD tour as well you had to upload a second copy of the same images one by one and match them up with their corresponding image in the standard resolution tour.  Tour Builder 3.0 saved all of your tours on your local computer so if you had a computer crash you lost your tour files.

Enter Virtual Tour Builder 4.0 Online Virtual Tour Software

With Tour Builder 4.0 online many of these troubles are solved and completely gone.  You still stitch your pans together on your computer in the Panavue photo stitching software on your computer, so you will have a copy of all the final stitch pans on yoru computer and will not be waiting for this process to be completed online.  The process is simple and much quicker than when Tour Builder 3.0 did the stitching in Panavue.  After you have stitched your panoramas, you log into your TMS account and click on the VTour software to build your tour.  You will pick the type of tour, enter a name for the tour and pick the colors for your tour viewer.  Next upload your images into the software.  Once the pans and stills are uploaded you give them their scene name and a description if you want.  The online software will then resize your pictures for both the HD tour and the standard tour. Then you can just organize your scenes, add hotspots, and you’re ready to go.  No more worrying about losing your tours if your computer was to crash.  Watch animation here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjmcxoCepmY

Still want to use Tour Builder 3.0???

We didn't think so!  If you're still using Tour Builder 3.0 and would like to SAVE LOTS OF TIME but are afraid to let go, give us a call.  We'll help you migrate from Virtual Tour Builder 3.0 to 4.0 Online today.

Yours Sincerely,

Ben Knorr

New RTV Image Scene Sorter Launched

One of the most popular requests we have received lately is an improved way to sort the scenes in Tour Builder 4.0 Online virtual tour software. We recently released a new step in the tour building process that allows you to sort by moving the scene names from the left side of the page to the right side in the order you want them to appear in the virtual tour. For those of you that are familiar with the scene sorter in Tour Builder 3.0 it essentially works the same way.

You are moving the scene names only - not dragging the scene. This works for both our V-Tours and V-Slides. Click on the link to download the PDF directions. These are also posted in TMS under Training.

Congrats on Your New Listing - New From RTV Marketing

Summer is here kids and it’s time to scoop up new customers like never before. As you all know this IS the busiest time of year so be sure to use your time wisely and stay focused. This month’s marketing piece just might be our most successful and useful piece that RTV has ever created for you to date.

This piece is used for snagging new customers via email and involves a very simple three step process to setup.

  1. First off you will need to chat with one of your close real estate customers.  Let them know that you would like to receive notification when new listings hit the MLS.  Any real estate agent can set this up for you quite easily. You might want to establish a minimum listing price but it’s entirely up to you. Also see if they're able to send it to you with the listing agent information on it. Some MLS's will be able to do this while others will not.  If you have trouble finding out who the original listing agent it for a listing you might simply ask your contact how you might be able to find this out as these emails are sent to you.
  2. Next you will start receiving many emails daily.  You will want to setup a RULE in OUTLOOK or whatever email client you use so these emails informing you of new listings matching your criteria are all going into a single folder in your computer.  One by one you will find out who the listing agent is for each listing, get their email address then add them to your database.
  3. Finally you simply send out to them a very elegant looking customized email congratulating them on getting the new listing.  Your email to them should also list some of your powerful digital property marketing tools.  Make sure you include links to your website and a photograph of yourself in your email for the added personal touch. Your email can be easily customized with your company information by using an HTML Editor like Trellian HTML Editor

That’s it! You’ve done it!  Now all you do is watch the emails come flowing back to you as you win over new customers looking for professional services.  This is really the perfect marketing piece since it saves the real estate agent time. The home seller might have said to them, “Are you going to send in a professional to do our virtual tour?”  You’re simply saving the agent time by not having to look at all.  As soon as that new listing hits the MLS your virtual tour company is conveniently in their inbox.

Enjoy the new marketing materials everyone!  For a more detailed outline of how to use this piece login to your http://rockpointemarketing.com today and watch The FORMULA 50 which breaks this down into a step by step process. Finally be sure you take the time to reevaluate what you have been doing, what has proven effective, what markets you have targeted successfully, and fine-tune your approach.  Let us know if you have a need for a specific marketing piece and we will do our best to create it.  Email your ideas to info((at))realtourvision.com.  All marketing documents can be accessed through http://www.RockPointeMarketing.com

How to get Noticed on YouTube

At Supernova Studios we’re getting ready to add YouTube videos (as part of an “exposure engine”) to our Nova Scotia virtual tours. RTV has always taught us the value of video and with the staggering statistics you’ll read below, we knew it was time to “get with the program”.

While our Nova Scotia virtual tours speak for themselves and are now available on mobile devices (thanks to RTV's new 360 virtual tour software), we understand that creating an additional YouTube video for them is one more unique service, in our already extensive bag of “marketing tricks”.

Producing an engaging video for YouTube is just the first step in launching a successful marketing campaign.

Rising through the ranks. Now that Google owns YouTube, there’s the added benefit that a video on YouTube automatically goes into Google’s search engine. Videos tend to catapult to the head of the line. It’s a great way to increase your site visibility in the rankings.

1.7 million Canadians watched over 4 billion videos in 2010. As of February 2011, YouTube has 490 million unique users worldwide per month, who rack up an estimated 92 billion page views each month. On average there are more than 400 tweets per minute containing a YouTube link. On Facebook over 150 years worth of YouTube videos are watched every single day.

Check out our Youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/novascotia360tours

Here are some tips for making your company’s videos rise to the top and leveraging them to help your business:

Participate in the YouTube community. People forget that YouTube has an active community, similar to eBay. Get your name around by commenting on other videos and joining existing topic-oriented groups or creating one if there isn’t one in your niche area.

Make sure your videos direct visitors to your site. Tens of thousands of viewers watching your videos sounds great, unless they have no direction to find your business afterwards. Make sure you include your Web address and other company contact information. Create a special “landing page” for viewers coming to your site from YouTube. It should have a similar look and feel to YouTube and intuitive navigation to close the deal on transactions or gathering client leads; whatever your marketing objective may be.

Using the right production values. Believe it or not, spending too much money producing the video is more of a problem than spending too little. If you look too slick, it may work against you. Most YouTube videos are shot with a $300 camera. YouTube videos are 320 x 400 pixels. Less important is the equipment, while more important is technique. Talking heads, stationary shots work best. That’s why spots like Blendtec work so well. It’s a guy standing at a little table with a blender. Audio, however, is something people don’t think enough about. If you’re using a camcorder with an external mic input, use it. Invest in a decent microphone.

Choose your keywords carefully. There’s only one way viewers find you on YouTube and that’s the site’s search engine. Using the right keywords is essential. Choose words that best fit your subject area and niche. Keywords should draw in a broad enough audience to get the exposure you seek, but not too much.

Awesome Email Marketing & Killer Graphics - Great Show RTV!!!

Mike Thompson along with Jason LaVanture created a great show the other night chalked full of information.  They shared with us which programs were used to create the killer email graphics.  They went even further by showing the step by step instructions on how you can build up and email to send out using tables.  The information was easy to understand, and I plan on implementing my new found skills into my Clinton Township virtual tour company.
The information in this webinar would be useful at any skill level.  This would be a great workshop for the next Annual RTV Virtual Tour Software Convention.  I really missed meeting Mike and Joyce, from Real Vision Studio, at the first conference.  I hope to see them at next year's show!

Thanks Again,
from the Sunrise Shoreline of Michigan,
your Clinton Township Virtual Tour Provider,

Choosing a Virtual Tour Company Capable of Change

Wow, technology changes fast out there!  What is shiny and new one day, is outdated and depreciated the next.  As a generation that has grown up fully immersed in cutting edge technology, we have come to expect no less from those we choose to handle our technological needs.

Since 2004, I have watched RTV virtual tour software company grow and change not only with the times, but well ahead of them.  They have listened to their audience (us as dealers as well as our clients) and responded by consistently delivering new virtual tour products and services while constantly re-inventing the old ones with relevance and vision, such that a "WOW factor" is still achieved when I demonstrate my capabilities as an RTV virtual tour dealer to prospective clients.

Recently, I created a full screen, high definition virtual tour of a surgical center, and the doctor's assistant called me the next week to tell me that the doctor was so excited about his new tour, that he literally had a party at his house to show off his new tour on his 60 inch screen!  As a professional that is fully committed to exceptional service to the clients of Virtually There Media, I love to serve clients in this manner, and RTV always backs me up "behind the scenes" allowing me to achieve these kind of results on a consistent basis.  I also have a sincere appreciation for the unwavering integrity that Jason and all of the RTV crew demonstrate on a consistent basis, as I strive to achieve high levels of integrity in all that I do as well.  Thanks RTV.  You guys are the best!

Thanks,

Lawrence McBride

Fun with the virtual tour team!

Dear RTV -

First I want to thank the virtual tour team for hosting us and being such good host.  Traverse City seems like a pretty nice place (when it is not snowing, sleeting, blowing hail chunks or raining).  Next year I hope to see more of the town if the conference is back in TC again.  No snow/cold please...LOL.

Jacque - thanks for getting this virtual tour conference off the ground.  It was really so nice to finally meet you...you are the best!

Ben - thanks for your patience Ben.  We really appreciate the kind comments and encouragement you share about Ben's photography.  After all was said and done, he actually wished he came...hopefully next year.

Jason - Also great to finally meet you.  To me, you are the voice of RTV and your enthusiasm overflows to everyone around you.

Thanks Again for all the work and thoughtfulness you all put into this conference.  Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Most Sincerely, Michael Metzig

Vero Beach Virtual Tour Update

Update on Vero Beach Virtual Tour Provider – Perfect Images. Perfect Images is a Virtual Tour Photography provider located in the Treasure Coast of Florida. We help listing agents and local businesses look their best. We offer the latest technology in our marketing products. From interactive HD 360 virtual tours, powerful full screen slideshow presentations, listing flyers and much more.

Among our newest products we have the mobile virtual tour! This has been a breakthrough especially in our fast moving world of technology and a challenging real estate market; real estate agents need to be in speed with new technology in order to market properties to the ever growing savvy technical buyers.

The HD slide show has been a success! My customers just love it. The full screen shows the property in a new dimension. See an Example here. I’ve had agents that have sold their properties after a week of doing the Slide show from buyers in other states, that flew in just to see that particular property and make an offer. It’s amazing what the internet does for businesses. With 85% of home shoppers looking in the internet before the contact an agent, it is increasingly more important now than ever to use the internet to reach those buyers.

Ivan and I are very happy with the decision we made almost six years ago. Working with RTV virtual tour software since 2006 has been the best decision we have made, working with a company that is up to date with technology, excellent customer service and always providing us with new products. We look forward to our future and plan to expand to other countries. It is a very exciting time.

Other services include Event and Wedding Photography

West Michigan Virtual Tour Company Ready For Summer

Frees Frame
The 1st Annual RTV Virtual Tour Convention was held two weeks ago and although we had cold weather in Traverse City, MI during this event, inside the Park Place hotel it was hot due to a group of very fired up virtual tour providers! What an awesome event!

As always, RTV provided their virtual tour dealers with a great deal of information, support and advancements in the latest technology, to help us grow, not only as individual businesses, but as a community of virtual tour providers across the globe. WE ARE RTV! GO TEAM!

Frees Frame came home with that enthusiasm and quickly began implementing every nugget acquired during the convention. Not only will Frees Frame profit from the knowledge gained from the guest speakers, but also from fellow virtual tour providers. It was the Social Networking event of the season!

How appropriate for us to experience the extraordinary results of social networking on a personal level, giving us an even greater appreciation for the impact it can have to increase Exposure for our clients.

We believe that the 1st Annual RTV Convention was the opening of a door that connects us to an awesome group of people heading down the path to a very bright future!

So with Social Networking, Mobile Virtual Tours, HDR Technology, the Support from an awesome virtual tour software Company, a Fantastic Team of fellow dealers and a glimpse of what the future holds for Frees Frame, we are bouncing with excitement and ready to Spring into Summer… and beyond!
